The Norwalk Board of Education (BOE) is responsible for educating ~ 12,000 students across 12 elementary, 4 middle and 4 high schools. The annual operating expense of doing so, represents 54% of the City of Norwalk’s overall operating budget. (Note: The 2020-21 approved budget has been capped at $208M; cuts/adjustments are pending.)

How are the BOE funds generally allocated?

  • Salaries 64.1% (Regular & extra wages for employees; contractual increases, incremental increases, car allowances.)
  • Employee Benefits (healthcare) 15.1% ( Contractual health care benefits including, medical, dental, vision & life insurance. Social security, retirement, longevity & unemployment benefits.
  • Other services 9.3% (Transportation, special education, out of district tuition, telephone & travel.)
  • Professional & Technical Services 3.7% (Special education & rehabilitative services, legal services, other consulting services by outside contractors.)
  • Property Services 2.8% (Upkeep & repairs of school buildings & other property services.)
  • Supplies & Materials 3.9% (Supplies, materials textbooks, paper, postage, graduation, oil, electric, gasoline.)
  • Equipment .9% (New & replacement of computers, instructional equipment, software & classroom furniture.)
  • Other objects .1% (Professional dues, memberships & publications.)
